Prof. Barry Katz

A historian of the future

Barry Katz is Professor of Design at Stanford University and at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, Fellow at IDEO, Inc. the Silicon Valley-based global innovation consultancy, where he has served as Dean of IDEO U, the company’s acclaimed program of Innovation Workshops, and Fellow at the University of Tokyo i-School. An award winning teacher, he is a specialist in the history, philosophy, and theory of design, and believes that there is no problem that cannot be illuminated by a historical perspective. Dr. Katz is the author of six books, including Change By Design: How Design Thinking Transforms Organizations and Inspires Innovation (2009, with Tim Brown), NONOBJECT (2010, with Branko Lukic), and Phase Change: The Dynamic History of Silicon Valley Design, to be published in 2011 by the MIT Press.
